Netaro's Speech Quirks

As someone with an interest in linguistics, I find Netaro's speech quirks really fascinating, so here are the ones I've noticed, along with examples of them in use. This list is not entirely comprehensive and is subject to updates.

Maybe the most noticeable of Netaro's speech quirks, because it's used so often. When using は as a particle, it is pronounced “wa”. The character わ is also pronounced “wa”, but isn’t used as a particle. Netaro swaps out the particle は for わ, which sounds the same, but is incorrect.

Fun fact: there is a Ryui card story where he tries to correct Netaro’s writing, and it is confirmed that Netaro also writes his は particle as わ in-universe.

Examples: Standard 2, Standard 4, Standard 5, Standard 6, Kizuna 1, Kizuna 5, Kizuna 6, Morning 1, Noon 1, Noon 2, Evening 1, Night 1, Night 2, Late Night 1… et cetera.

I take it back, this is the most noticeable of Netaro's speech quirks. In standard Japanese, だ is (very basically) the word for “is”, and often follows nouns at the end of a sentence. Netaro replaces だ with じゃ, and subsequently replaces だろう with じゃろ (also see “shortening vowels”).

Netaro sometimes shortens negative verb endings, from “nai” to “n”. This isn't as unique to Netaro as some other quirks, but still worth pointing out.

Examples: Kizuna 3, Event, Halloween (2024), 1st Anniversary

On some, but not all occasions, when there are extended vowels, Netaro will either shorten them or replace the second character with ー.  This is also less unique, but still worth mentioning.
